Very little has been written about it. The main source, apart from custom, is the Naval Regulations. The first mention of the ceremony in naval regulations occurs during the American Civil War; Since then, little has changed in the team change procedures.

The United States Naval Government Regulations of 1865, Article 3, Section 1, No. 72 states:
