As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many military-provided child care options are limited. However, the military childcare system has struggled for years with thousands waiting for very few childcare places. To correct this care gap, members of parliament proposed improvements to the program that will be implemented on September 1, 2020 (postponed from June 1). The change will give higher priority to Coast Guard families and the Center's ability to cancel students if someone with a higher priority needs immediate placement.

For those who cannot take advantage of posted child care, the Military Child Care Pay Assistance Program is there to help. Child care subsidies help keep CDC rates low for families. However, because installation facilities are limited and expensive to operate, these subsidies are also available to families receiving eligible civilian care. Previously, papers were issued through the service branch and it was difficult to manage. This online service is provided through Child Care Aware® of America (CCAoA). Once alternative care is obtained and cost assistance is approved, CCAoA will pay the provider directly.

Active duty military members serving in the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps are eligible to apply for the Military Child Care Assistance Program.
