Glock 43 Vs Sig P365xl - For a guy who likes DA/SA autos and tight revolvers, the Sig P365 XL might seem like a bad choice. But I can't deny that it's a great weapon. In this review, I'll go over what I've learned to like about the P365 XL after 2,000 rounds, and a few things that could use some improvement.
The Sig Sauer P365 XL is the best new pistol I've tested in a long time. Today I want to talk about why this has become one of my favorite concealed carry options.

Let's go back to the 1990s - the happy days of the two greats. At the time, the minigun was a full-sized gun with a cut off handle and a slightly shortened slide and barrel. For such a small force, they scaled things down a bit. We can see great examples of this in some of the most popular cars of the time; m Glock 19 and Glock 26. When all the other gun companies started producing their polymer pistols in the early 2000s, they followed the same basic pattern.
A few years ago the single polymer 9mm came out and shook things up. In 2012, the Smith & Wesson Shield wasn't the first, but it was a gun that took the top nine positions to become one of the most common types of handguns in the country. Since then, we've seen dozens of new 9mm polymer pistols emerge from every corner of the industry. And now we are all sick of them. In particular, we must evaluate and review these things throughout our lives.
In January 2018, Zig Sauer rescued us from this endless tedium with something a little different: the P365. Looks like a lonely nine. Its volume is equal to nine piles. But somehow they managed to cram ten rounds into this little magazine jam machine. A typical 9mm single stack magazine holds 6-8 rounds, but this is not a single stack magazine. The top three or four rounds in the magazine are more or less overlapping, but then the outer and lower fans, the rounds are as tight as two stacks.
The gun was a huge success. Received various awards. There were safety issues at first, but the worst of them were resolved after the first year. Last May, Sig released a version with a frame-mounted, manual safety. Last July they released this version: the Sig P365 XL.

It has the same slim profile as the original P365, but is longer and slightly longer for 12-round magazines. Sig also makes a 15-inch long magazine. That's about 3 ounces heavier than the standard P365, loaded at 26.3 ounces. Most of that extra weight comes from the longer slide and barrel, which is 3.7 inches instead of 3.1. It's available with or without a manual safety - it's safe. It has a standard XSeries trigger - only available as an aftermarket upgrade for the original P365, but standard on the XL. Also standard is a set of Sig X-RAY3 night sights and a slide to accept micro dot optics.
It's fair to ask why I was interested in this pistol or the P365 in general. For the most part, I'm happy to accept the snub nose. A single mag stack with two extra rounds in the mag doesn't do much for me. If I'm really going to consider a gun for personal use, it needs to be easy to shoot, easy to carry, and meet my safety standards. I'll come back to the first two in a minute. Let me get safety out of the way first. Or "risk management" might be a better term.
If you've been watching my videos for a while, you know that for small cars I usually prefer a hammer gun, whether it's double action or double action / single action. I like to hold the hammer with my thumb so the gun can't fire while reloading. The Striker Control Device available for Glocks is the next best option. When reloading it does the same thing as a hammer. A manual safe is a distant third choice, but depending on how it's designed, I'd consider it for carrying a gun.
I don't feel safe with everyone. I am very hesitant to recommend the safety to a shooter or someone who doesn't practice regularly. But I will be drawing and handling the gun thousands and thousands of times both in dry work and on the range. Every repainter has the potential to become a catastrophic disaster. All you have to pay attention to is a momentary indifference.

So in addition to following all the best practices for safe gun handling and reloading, I'd like to have at least one more mechanical safeguard to help reduce risk. I especially like this extra layer if it doesn't compromise the gun's usability. Whether or not this handheld safety device does this is debatable.
I want to shower a lot of love on this gun and talk about how amazing it is. But this security of the hand is not good. It's not scary either. It's not unlike the small safety net you'll find on the Smith & Wesson Shield. It's not nearly as bad as the amazing safety on the LCP .22 LR I mentioned a few weeks ago. It's definitely on and off and it's amazing. It can still be good. It's not big enough and needs to be set about a quarter of an inch forward on the frame.
I don't know why gun companies keep doing this. I think it's proof that the people making the design decisions aren't shooting guns. There are plenty of examples of reliable hand tools out there, so there's really no excuse for not knowing what it should look like.
I mentioned the safety on the M&P 22 Mini earlier. It is very safe. It's not huge at all, but wide enough to rest your thumb on while shooting. When holding the gun, the thumb rests gently on top of the safety to cock it. You can't miss it. The reliability of the P365 is too big and too small to be useful, so I occasionally miss it on the first test. If I put my thumb on it, that sharp back rubs against the thumb when the gun is cocked again.

It was just annoying at first, but in the long run, it ends up cutting my thumb. Right now I have good blood under the spots from the first two. To be honest, I could live with that if the loyalty was wider and sharing was easier. Sig, take some of the sweet, sweet money you got for those magazines at $50 each and give it to the R&D team so they can fix this mess.
The appeal of the Sig P365 XL isn't just in its small size, so it's easy to carry. Most weapons are small. This gun is small and capable of shooting. And it is smaller than other weapons. Let's look at some size comparisons to show what I mean.
Here on the right we have the largest 9mm in the world, the Glock 19. On the left is a stack of Glock 9mm, the Glock 43. It's not the smallest 9mm out there, but I think it's still among the smallest nines ever made. feeling surgical.
I close these two and adjust them with the handle. This is the largest part of the handle where your hand web goes. Obviously, the 43 has a shorter slide and grip, resulting in a slightly shorter reach.

If we look at them later, the 43 is significantly thinner. I measured the largest part of the grip without the magazine properly attached and it was .81 inches for the 43 and 1.31 inches for the 19.
